As much as I love helping people successfully navigate change, sometimes I struggle with it myself. This is one of those times.
Last month, I recognized that the company I was coaching was reaching the point in their transformation where they could sustain the new way of working on their own. They had started with a mission to “change how we work,” and I believe they have achieved that outcome. I observed the executives leveraging lean and agile values in their daily decision-making, teams of teams delivering more value sooner and most people taking collective ownership of execution to aligned objectives. It was time for them to continue with the program and team coaches as they shifted their focus to continuous improvement.
I had to consider what was next for my journey…
- Transform another company at the mega-corporation I was working with?
- Pack my bags and trade in my car keys for a boarding pass?
- Look at a different role with my current employer but risk shifting my focus from coaching?
As providence would have it, I was presented with a fourth option… The ability to continue to serve as an enterprise coach, while working from home 50-70% of the time. After almost three years of weekly commutes to New England, followed by a year of three to four hours per day in the worst of Dallas traffic, it sounded great. When I learned that I’d be part of a collaborative team of talented agilists while growing my skills with another industry, I realized it was a blessing.
I’ve spent a week in my new position, and while there has been a firehose of new information, I am looking forward to the adventure ahead. With my resolve to embrace this change, I have decided to reboot my blog and see where I can take it in the months to come.
